Welcome to the Krell Farm, over 90 acres of land, farmed by three generations of the same family for nearly 90 years. The property extends from Meadow Road on its northern boundary to within a quarter of a mile of Route 6 at its southern end. To the west it is bordered by Plainville Ave., where we find the familiar Farm Stand. Judson Lane runs along the farm’s mostly wooded side to the east.
The farmstead encompasses 20 acres of meadow and crop land, 50 acres of woodland and 20 acres of wetlands, including a couple of ponds. Each habitat is suitable for a great variety of wildlife as well as providing an environment for growing produce, hay and straw. The vistas are impressive winter, spring, summer and fall, whether within the coziness of the forested canopy or standing out in the middle of the grassy upper fields.
Peter Krell and parents
In the recent past Spring and Summer found Pete & Mary Krell, along with their family, on the land planting, tending and havesting crops from flowers and strawberries, to vegetables, potatoes and hay. During the Fall the seasonal selection of pumpkins, squash and gourds filled the shelves and baskets in the farm stand. Christmas time brought a yard full of evergreen trees. Inside wreaths crowded the walls, trimmed & ready for your doors, or to decorate on your own from the collection of pretty, festive trinkets on display.
Peter Krell
A century has turned and dozens of seasons have come & gone since Pete, his parents and siblings ran this farm together. Protecting and nurturing farms and the open space habitats that go hand-in- hand with them is part of insuring our own food source future. It is a valuable legacy that today’s residents need to appreciate and plan for. Once we allow ourselves to realize the importance of it, we will always grab the opportunity to preserve the land.
The people of Farmington have proven time and time again that they do appreciate this non-renewable resource; that they understand the economics of over development and that they will guarantee a proper balance between open land and built up land. On Thursday January 17th we should once again make the quality of life choice and Vote YES to purchase the Krell Farm.
