Farmington Land Trust (FLT) is excited to partner with West District Elementary School students in a citizen science study sponsored by Harvard Forest. In the study, which has been active since 2004, Harvard Forest ecologist Dr. John O'Keefe is researching how climate change may be affecting our growing season. Locally, he is tracking the expansion and opening of buds in spring, and leaf coloration and leaf drop in autumn.
West District Kindergarten students will visit the FLT environmental education center four times in both spring and fall to monitor and collect data on bud burst and leaf drop. Data will be submitted to the Harvard study, and teachers and students will be able to analyze and compare their data to regional schoolyard data.
FLT is proud to host these future scientists and stewards of our land.
